2019 is truly an exciting time for the game on Vancouver Island and across Canada. The resurgence of a professional soccer league in Canada has been in the works for many years and the Canadian Premier League (CPL) has arrived, a coast-to-coast league that features an inaugural seven teams across our nation, from Vancouver Island to Halifax.
British Columbia’s flagship team has arrived on the Island with local product and former Canadian national team player Josh Simpson at the helm. One of the main goals of the new league is to promote local talent with a league requirement to feature a minimum of six Canadian citizens at one time on the field.
Playing out of a newly-renovated, 6,000-seat Westhills Stadium beginning in late April, Pacific FC will bring professional soccer to the region and will be competing on the same stage as MLS teams in the 2019 Canadian Championships!
Soccer is a part of the Island’s culture. During the summers of 1989 & 1990, Victoria had a professional team as part of the Canadian Soccer League (CSL). This team, the Victoria Vistas, featured many of today's soccer coaches and enthusiasts who remain on the island and continue to contribute to the game such as David Ravenhill, Frank Woods, Ian Bridge, George Pakos, Iain Baird, John Noble, Grant Darley, and Shel Brodsgaard to simply name a few.
